Vendor Review: Q Weddings
Q Weddings was founded in 2002 by Suzi Q. Varin. Suzi started playing “photographer” at an early age. She began her career in the late 90’s and made it official in 2002 when she graduated from The University of Texas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. She has been published nationally including two cookbooks but her true passion is weddings. “I’m inspired when two people find each other and want to declare it to everyone they know.”
Suzi prefers to shoot with film because she feels “that film capture is more beautiful with its long tonal range and dreamy skin tones.” Clients have flown her all over the US and abroad to capture that “special day”. Some of her most memorable locations include a barn on the ocean in Maine, an 1880’s church in San Francisco with real tree trunks for beams and a primitive yet luxe eco-resort in Mexico. After a wedding in the British Virgin Islands she accompanied the couple on their honeymoon and documented them sailing around the area with their friends.
Suzi loves historical locations, anything architectural and venues with a “Wow” factor. Austin venues that fit this bill include The Driskill and Laguna Gloria. Her favorite back-drops for wedding and/or engagement photos are the couple’s favorite restaurants or dive bars. Anything that is tied with food is fun.
According to Suzi, the latest trend in wedding photography is off camera lighting. She feels the use of props is at its peak with couples becoming more selective and using only a few special objects. Suzi’s advice on how to capture that special moment is to be true to yourself.
She has two pieces of advice on how to make for better wedding photography and a more enjoyable wedding in general. The first is to hire an event planner because they are worth more than you’ll ever realize and you should be a guest at your own wedding! The second is to see each other before the ceremonysand get all your portraits done while you’re fresh. You’ll feel relaxed, yet still emotional for the big walk down the aisle. And you’ll have the rest of the day to party after the ceremony.
