Today, I want to talk about masterminds. Maybe you’ve heard this word thrown around here and there, but secretly, you don’t have a clue about what they’re talking about? Yeah, I know, it all sounds a bit Pinky and the Brain, at first. Or if you live in the UK, then you’re probably thinking about Mastermind, the British game show that’s well known for its super difficult questions, Gestapo-esque set design of intimidation and an uncanny air of seriousness.
In short, it’s none of that. I thought I’d do a quick solo episode all about online group masterminds, in case you’re thinking about joining one in the near future.
Basically, it’s a collective of like-minded professionals led (typically) by a business coach. It’s somewhere you can find a combination of education, brainstorming, peer accountability and support in a group setting.
Participants learn from each other in a safe environment of mutual respect. We celebrate each other’s wins and boost each other up when someone’s faced with a business challenge.

Tips to find a mastermind
If you’re looking to join a mastermind, here’s a few tips on what to look for:
Who’s leading the mastermind?
Who runs it? How long have they been doing this? What’s their track record of success in helping others in the mastermind achieve results?
Do your research. Look at the testimonials and go with someone you know, like and trust as your mentor.
Is it built specifically for you?
Make sure the mastermind is created specifically for someone like you, where you are CURRENTLY in your journey in your career or life.
Typically, the leader is someone who’s at least five years ahead of you and can be someone who will help you see potential roadblocks ahead and help you avoid making the same costly (or timely) mistakes along the way.
Does it attract a variety of complementary industries?
I also think a great mastermind is one that’s mixed with a variety of participants from various different industries and backgrounds. So, if it’s a collective of business owners who’ve all been in business 4-7 years, but work in, let’s say, live events and design and marketing, the access to fresh perspectives outside your industry might just be the spark you need to overcome a big challenge you’re facing.
What can I expect once inside?
A well-curated mastermind is one where the coach has hand-picked the right people to come together for a specific period of time. Think about it… they say you become like the five people you surround yourself with most. The same applies here. You want people just like you who will take action, #DoTheThing and are on your wavelength.
What kind of results can I achieve?
Bottomline, your results are directly related to your level of commitment to #DoTheThing.

My mastermind
I lead a group coaching program called the Super Mentor Academy, which is an 8-week online group mastermind, created specifically to help business owners and solopreneurs learn how to:
- simplify their workflow,
- find new clients that they LOVE to work with,
- overcome the overwhelm, and
- smash their financial goals.
We will teach them how to simplify and optimize the operations side of their business. So things like cash flow, sales, hiring/firing, time management and more.
It’s like getting an MBA in 8 weeks but a heckuva lot SIMPLER – in short, you’ll learn how to run your business better.

Being a business owner is super lonely work. And sometimes, it ain’t pretty either. It requires persistence, grit, resilience and the ability to shake things off, when need be.
But the one thing you might be missing (especially if you work from home) is connection.
A group, a village, a trusted network of people who will cheer you on, dust you off if you’re having a bad day, and be that support network for you, when you need to vent.
Lord knows, your dog is a good listener… but likely, he’s not very good at giving you direction or advice.
Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Find your people. Apply for that big, scary mastermind and do the thing.
You don’t have to have your ISH all together. In fact, I’m willing to bet others in the group are also hiding a few imperfections as well. And as they should be… that’s what being human is all about.
Join a mastermind. And be amazed how far you’ve come in a year from now.
