Time for a guided visualization exercise: How to spring clean your mind. Ahh yes, it’s that time of year when the daffodils are blooming once again, the winter ice is melting, and there’s an overwhelming urge (in my world, at least) to declutter my entire home. But what if we could do the same with our minds, releasing the things we no longer need anymore and making space, peace and creating a little bit of breathing room? Doesn’t that sound nice?
So, how does it work? Simple! Let my voice be a guide for you as you focus inward to help you tap into your inner wisdom and Intuition for answers.
Listen and participate in this guided visualization exercise: How to spring clean your mind.
Before we get started, here are a few things that you’ll need to do in order to get the most out of this.
- Create a safe space - no distractions or interruptions
First off, you’ll need to create a safe space where you won’t be distracted or interrupted… and also, keep in mind that during this exercise, you’ll have your eyes closed. So yeah, probably not best to do this one while driving.
Silence your phone notifications… The world can wait for the next few minutes.
Then, get comfortable in a seated position or lying down, if that feels better. You get to decide. As with all visualization and breathing exercises we do together this year, you always get to decide what is best for you… take what you need, bless and release the rest.
Okay, now close your eyes or avert your gaze to the ground.
- Take 3 intentional breaths together with me
Let’s take three intentional, life-affirming breaths.
- Deep breath in through the nose, expand the belly, hold at the top, and then slowly release through the mouth. (Do this three times.)
Now, let your breathing come back to a normal pace, whatever feels right for you.
- Do a body scan and feel your feet
It’s time to do a body scan… imagine you are slowly scanning your entire body from the tip top of your head, slowly down like molasses, all the way to your fingertips, and then to your toes.
What sensations do you feel? Knots, twinges of pain, soreness, or even , on the flip side, any feelings of harmony, joy, or flow…. just notice what you feel in your body, without judgment or trying to fix it. Just scan down, ever so slowly until you’ve done your entire body.
Once you’re at your feet, really take notice of what it feels like to have your feet make contact with the ground. To be firmly rooted down, the safety and security of that sensation. What do your feet feel like right now?
- Time to visualize - how to spring clean your mind
I want you to imagine you’re at home and you’ve opened your junk drawer. You know, that one spot where random stuff seems to gather from God knows where. You open the drawer up with the intention of clearing it out and think to yourself, “hey luckily, it’s not that big of a drawer.”
Just a few focused moments and this thing will be in tip-top shape before you know it.
Breathe.
Junk drawer time. You follow the age-old wisdom of pulling everything out of the space, then sorting it into three piles:
- Keep
- Donate
- Discard
- …and then, Organize.
The act of pulling it out helps you see what you’re working with, what’s important enough to keep, and what needs to move on.
In this process, you open that big stack of mail, recycle most of it, and sort through the things you need to take action on this week. You figure out a clever way to put things back into this drawer that actually belong there… and organize it just so, that it simply makes sense that way.
Breathe.
Ok, that was just a warmup session… you’re ready for the big time. You’re now moving on to your pantry. Time to spring clean this portion of your special place.
Once again, you pull it all out and place items on your kitchen table. You find expired cans of soup, stale boxes of cereal, and bouillon cubes from 1985. Time to clear out the junk… And let’s face it, you’re eating way better these days than you used to and this old stuff just makes your head hurt or your tummy extra gassy. You’re glad to let it go.
Breathe.
You wipe down the shelves and place your favorite spices in order, A-Z on a special organizer caddy.
Doing this prep work now, your future self will thank you later when you make your favorite meal this week. A deep sense of satisfaction washes over you… It feels good to clear out the junk that no longer serves you.
Breathe.
Your last feat today is to tackle the garage.
The place where boxes upon boxes of old memorabilia and photos live, but also your dusty camping gear too. However, you’ve worked up to this moment. You’re confident you can handle it and you’ve saved up the energy intentionally to do the work. You open the garage door and let the cool spring air come inside. It’s time.
Breathe.
One by one, you go through all the boxes you see and take the time (with love) to decide what you’re keeping, what you’re letting go of, and what you’re making space for next.
With your favorite playlist on in the background, it’s light work as you make your way through the entire space with grace and ease. A cool breeze wisps across your face as you reminisce over that one photo of you and your best friends from high school. “That was a lovely day, indeed,” you think to yourself… and decide to frame that photo to display in your living room.
In the next box, you find stacks upon stacks of old (unopened) mail, random computer cords, and general nonsense.
This must have been one of those boxes you packed in a hurry when you last moved… shoved it in the back of the garage, to deal with another day.
Luckily, that day is today and this junk is going bye-bye. Time to deal with it and release it. You feel lighter already.
Breathe.
After some time of putting the work in, you step back and marvel at all you’ve been able to accomplish.
A tidy junk drawer, a sparkling pantry, and an organized garage. Are there more pockets you could focus on? Sure, aren’t there always. But today. Today this was enough. You feel it in your heart and in your soul.
Take this last moment to say thank you with your full spirit and remember that you can revisit this gift any time you wish. It’s yours forever and ever. You are never alone and you are always fully supported.
Take a moment to gather yourself with a deep, belly-filling breath. And when you’re ready, open your eyes.
--------------
So, how did it feel to tidy those three spots in your home? To mentally go through the process of focusing time and effort on clearing out the things that no longer serve you?
I want you to set a 7-minute timer, grab a pen and paper, and take this time to write down everything you remember from this visualization exercise.
- What wisdom was shared?
- What visual clues did you see?
- What did your higher self look like in the mirror?
- What part of this exercise is sticking MOST in your mind and in your heart, that you can’t seem to shake?
- …and what’s one thing that you can do today (with courage and simplicity) to take action on this vision, in real life?
One final whisper
Everything we did today together can help you spring clean your mind as well. All the same principles apply.
This work is getting you one step closer to helping you release the thoughts and ideas that are stuck in your mind that are no longer serving you.
Sometimes, if it’s a core belief, it might be hard to let it go.
But always remember dear friend, if it’s bringing you (or others) harm or keeping you playing small… Maybe it’s time to reconsider how much power you give this thought in your life.
What would it feel like to lay it down, try something different for the next 30 days? Or just let it go completely?
Don’t forget…
Your thoughts are not you.
They are just whispers, stories, and sometimes anchors that we collect over time. Some are healthy, others are coping mechanisms.
Don’t be afraid to widen your camera angle and explore a different perspective.
Just like spring cleaning your home, your mind might need some breathing room and space, as well.
I hope this visualization sticks with you the entire week through. Do it again and again if you need clarity or fresh ideas to help your spirit feel refreshed once again… because when you tap into your deep inner knowing, you’re accessing the deep inner wisdom. That electric energy that can be found inside all of us that connects us all together. It knows. You know. We all know if we are brave and we open ourselves to it.
You can do this, I believe in you.
It’s time to SIMPLIFY.
